Week 2: Share the Olympic Spotlight

We have 3 days till the start of the Olympics. Olympic fever is running high. You can hardly turn on your TV or hop online without seeing something about Sochi 2014.

Welcome to week 2 of Go For Gold: Your Olympic Media Manual. This blog series is your destination for learning how you can convert your Olympic viewing into valuable learning that will grow your media presence and your business.

If you missed week one, please check it out because these five weeks are designed to be cumulative. Think of them as your Olympic viewing companion. Each week you will walk away with actionable strategies that you can start implementing right now.

This week we are talking about how to link the Olympic momentum to your business. In other words, we are focusing on how you can capture just a fraction of the Olympic attention for yourself. Think about what that could do for your business.

Let’s get started.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that one of the most effective strategies for attracting media attention is being timely and relevant. And what is timely and relevant right now? The Olympics!

How do you connect yourself to the conversation everyone is having? Easy! Follow these four strategies:

  1. You must watch the Olympics or at the very least read about it so you know what is going on. If you are not up to date on the latest, you cannot possibly jump on it while it’s hot.
  2. Look for plot lines in the Olympics that connect to your expertise. Here’s an example: let’s say you are a knee expert and you see an athlete who struggles with knee pain (like if Lindsey Vonn was competing). There’s an opportunity for you to comment. Post a blog about it or reach out to your local media and offer analysis.
  3. Monitor Breaking News. For example, unfortunately, we’ve already heard a lot about security concerns and we hope for safety. But let’s say you are a security expert, perhaps you have insight to share when news breaks on this topic.
  4. Look for local connections and set Google alerts for the athletes from your area. Brainstorm ways your business can celebrate local athletes. Maybe you own an incredible Italian restaurant and you hear that your local athlete loves Italian food. You could conjure up a special dish in his or her honor and create buzz around it. Share the recipe on line and with media so potential customers think about you every time they cook.
  5. These strategies are exciting for your business! You are only limited by your own creativity and whether you stay on top of what’s happening in the games.

The games start Friday and I can’t wait. Keep your eyes and ears open. There are opportunities everywhere.

And stay tuned for next week’s installment of Go For Gold: Your Olympic Media Manual where you will learn one critical quality that Olympic athletes have and you may be missing. I will tell you what it is and how to get it.
